Holistic Visioning for the New Year

How do you keep in mind all of who you are in your new year’s resolutions, goals, or intentions?

This year I went for it. I felt compelled to envision myself on all levels of my being and in detail. I wanted to truly step into what was enlivening and inspiring in me – in all areas of my being.

I’d like to share this process with you now in case it helps you in your process of being who you want to be in your life. This is meant to be fun and growthful! But first, a note about the many layers of your being…

 

Layers of Your Being

There are 5 layers of our being, or Koshas, according to the ancient wisdom of Yoga and Ayurveda. From the outermost layer to the innermost layer, the 5 layers include: physical, energy, mental/emotional, intellect/spiritual, and pure consciousness.

The innermost level of our being has the most power to transform, but growth can come from any level. Each level has different needs for self – love and care. In the outline below, I offer ideas for how to care for each level of being.

 

Envisioning

Who

With each layer, I felt into myself while keeping in mind each layer of my being. I opened to allow words to come to me about who I want to be and what words inspire life in that level of my being. These words help me remember from which place of being, or which possibility of myself, I want to act from.

There’s a difference between choosing, for example, to exercise from a place of fear (“I fear that I won’t look good so I should work out”) than from a place of delight (“I’m delighted to feel alive and healthy”). The words you choose guide from which place of being you’d like to embolden in your life.

What

Next, I chose types of activities that I wanted to commit to based on that level of being and what I find important. This provides me more focused structure on what I will do. Each time I take a step in terms of these actions, I bring myself back to the main words of who am I being beforehand.

Why

A third dimension of your plan, perhaps the most important, is WHY you want to do you’ve committed to. This gets to the root of your motivation and reason for taking these action steps. If you take every single one of your goals and ask yourself why, you open to a deep connection with your actions, one that can ease and flow. The inspiring words you choose as far as who you want to be may be a simple guide to why you want to take these steps in your life.

 

An Idea of Envisioning

I’d like to offer you a skeleton of how you can structure your holistic visioning and some possibilities of what to include. I’ve offered some of the words and activities in each level of being from my own visioning and from ideas I have for you. These are some, not all, examples. Feel free to draw upon these to create your own holistic vision for yourself! With each level of being in the list, I also added the areas of Relationships, Work, and Abundance (Money+).

I encourage you to be specific and reasonable with yourself in deciding frequently you’d like to commit to each activity. For example, you might commit to having a massage 5 times this year or once a week, depending on your schedule and the level of importance this has. Be sure to let yourself ramp up and allow adjustments if your plan isn’t working.

 

Physical Body

  • Body – Work: Massage, Acupuncture, Chiropractic, craniosacral, Somatic Experiencing
  • exercise
  • A fun physical activity or goal: Ballet, handstands, rock climbing, improv movement
  • Self Care Routines: regular sleep, eating, exercise
  • Routine/rituals that make you feel good: drinking warm tea, using essential oils, lighting a candle
  • Nutrition: including leafy greens 2x a day, eating nuts instead of candy, intuitive eating
  • Space improvements: caring for your space, clearing clutter, organizing your home, getting a new apartment

Energy Body

Feel free to use this framework, or pieces of it to create your own holistic vision of yourself this year, this moment, or this life!

Keep in mind, that you are constantly evolving and growing, and your vision of yourself may parallel your process. Be gentle and reasonable with yourself and allow adjustments as you go along. I also encourage you to investigate when you change your plan whether it is out of loving yourself and being reasonable, or fear of actually stepping into what you desire.
